A place in the top flight of French football will be at stake in the following three days when Auxerre and Saint-Etienne take on each other over two legs to complete the final list of Ligue 1 contestants for the next season.
Auxerre came third at the end of the regular campaign in Ligue 2 thanks to a strong finish of the season and a run of six wins and a draw in the last seven matches in the process.
Jean Marc Furlan’s troops have survived a real drama on Friday evening when they faced Sochaux in the promotional playoffs semifinal.
Auxerre were a better team on the pitch by a mile but they just couldn’t find a way to break the deadlock as it ended in a goalless draw on the occasion.
Luckily for Furlan and the team’s fans, Auxerre’s players made no mistake from the spot, converting all five penalties in the shootout series to advance to this final.
There is plenty to like about Auxerre’s chances here against Saint-Etienne who have had an extremely disappointing campaign in the elite class of French football this season.
The visitors only managed to keep the playoffs spot and avoid the automatic relegation thanks to a late equalizer from Romain Hamouma in a 1-1 draw away at Coupe de France champions Nantes on Saturday evening.
