Issues relating to unemployment have become topical because there are huge numbers of the youth who are unemployed. Many graduate from schools expecting to be absorbed into the public sector only to find themselves without a job for years. Government after government have made a myriad of promises and yet they produce very little as compared to the gargantuan promises they made.
One of the biggest initiatives of the first term of the Akufo-Addo tenure was NABCO. This was a means of providing temporary employment at different levels for graduates without jobs. NABCO is set to come to an end in soon and many are wondering what will happen next. Today, Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Miracles Dennis Aboagye, a former MCE of Akuapem North and best remembered for walking out on Johnnie Hughes joined Johnnie to discuss issues relating to unemployment.
When asked what next after NABCO ends, Dennis noted that government is starting to give permanent jobs to those in NABCO. He added that it will not be long before everyone is absorbed. Johnnie however disagreed and said that he has received messages from NABCO beneficiaries complaining about salaries and how many of them fear they will lose their jobs when NABCO goes down.
Dennis was however of the view that Johnnie should stop speculating and listen to him because salaries are being paid and workers are being employed at some permanent workplaces. Dennis boldly declared that it is only the NPP government that has shown real commitment to creating jobs because the NDC failed and the NPP are now being made to cover up the losses of the NDC. He called on NABCO workers to be patient as government works to grant them permanent jobs.
It will be interesting to see what will happen when NABCO finally shuts down. Will everyone get employed permanently? What about the new graduates who are coming out? What will keep them?
