These emoluments were approved by the seventh parliament and has only been adopted by the president.

Whiles commenting on this issue as it has become a national topic, the information minister, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has however clarified that the approval was done by the previous parliament. Oppong Nkrumah added that all surviving spouses of heads of state have been receiving salaries since president Kufuor’s tenure.

Mr Oppong Nkrumah has clarified that, the decision was not a unilateral one by the president as being painted out there in the public domain.

Rebecca Akufo Addo and Samira Bawumia will from this month receive a monthly salary of 21,000 cedis excluding their allowances.

According to the roport, the two individuals are expected to receive the corresponding arrears of the said amount from 2017 since the present first and second families took over the helms of affairs of the state.

This news has gone viral and has got Many Ghananians talking about the motivation behind the payment of the spouses of the president and vice president salaries and allowances while their husbands are the ones who were voted for to serve the people of Ghana.

Many Ghananians think that, this is not a good move by the politicians in Ghana as the already burdened economy will be over stretched.

The hardships in the system is very real probably because of the Corona virus pandemic . Earlier this year, the workers of Ghana were told not to expect any significant increment in salaries because the economy has been devastated by the pandemic and that workers should not expect any significant salary increments.

Sadly , despite the astronomical increments in the prices of goods and services no government worker has received a pesewa as increment in their salaries since the beginning of the year 2021.

Many Ghananians believe this is not how the public purse should be protected.
