The Mansa Floating Hub shines brightly at night. The glitz and glam of disco and neon lights caressing the Atlantic and then returning to shore adds to the hub's glitz and glitter.
According to its founders, the space will work as a catalyst for content creation while also providing a venue for creatives to integrate and mentorship opportunities to build practical pan-Africanism.
For us, the hub is a place, a platform, where all African and international innovators can find themselves, create, and thrive. "Whether in fashion, music, the cooking - in any art in general," adds Mansa's brainchild, businessman Samba Bathily.
Cesaria Evora, the Grammy-winning Cape Verdean singer, is immortalized in a mural that towers over Mindelo. It's because of her that it's famous.
Igo Diarra, the director of Bamako's renowned Medina gallery, has established a new showroom dedicated to great photographer Malik Sidibé.
Mansa was conceived and developed by famous architect Kunlé Adeyemi, who was inspired by Cape Verde's rich cultural and environmental resources. The structure is based on the MFSTM (Makoko Floating Method), a modular and prefabricated floating timber construction system for water-based constructions.
"We were thinking about a framework that reflects African culture," NLÉ Works founder Kunlé Adeyemi stated.
The performance "Traversée du Dessert," presented by world-famous Niger fashion designer Alphady, portrays the historical desert adventures of Mansa Musa, the ninth Emperor of the Mali Empire, on his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324.
Mansa Musa was a Malian who became the world's first billionaire - also the first African and Malian to do it. "It's [this collection] a means of showing the world that Africa is rich, capable, and has a great thing - its beauty and way of being," Alphady explained.
The creators of the Mansa Floating Hub seek to transform Mindelo into Africa's cultural capital.
