Is This Picture The True Reflection Of Society In Kumasi ?

The overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom is one of the most revered Kings in Ghana and perhaps all over the world. The culture and all that come with the Ashanti Kingdom are well respected all over the world. But lately, the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom has come under intense attack particularly because of galamsey.

Along with the attacks coming upon the revered chief are other attacks that seek to point to the underdevelopment of the Ashanti Kingdom compare to other Kingdoms outside Ghana. People have gone as far as comparing the Ashanti Kingdom to Dubai

Whilst the galamsey attacks might be justified, the attacks as a result of underdevelopment might be a little bit over the top. I do not know what real powers the King of the Ashanti Kingdom have over the rulership of his territory to the extent that he can influence the development of his area. For example, are taxes paid to the King? How much authority does the king truly hold over the central government concerning his territory that he could influence the construction of roads and other development projects?

One thing that people who criticized the King forgets is that the king represents a whole tradition and culture of the people. The King is not above reproach but when you insult the king, you are insulting the identical representation of a whole generation. For example, my father may be stupid and I could call him privately and tell him he is stupid but when I stand in public and call my dad stupid, I am insulting myself indirectly because it means I am also stupid because a stupid person is the one who gave birth to me
