What You Don't Know About The Gurma Ethnic Group.

There are about nine major ethnic groups in Ghana. Among them are the Gurma, Mole-Dagbani, Ga-Adangbe, Ewe, Akan. So many tribes come together to form an ethnic group.

The Gurma pronounced "Gruma" also called Gurmanche is an international ethnic group found in Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo and Benin. They are heavily populated in Burkina Faso in the city of Fada N'Gourma and form about 6% of the Ghanaian population.

Popular tribes forming the Gurma ethnic group are the Bimoba also known as Moba, Baasare, Kotokoli,Konkomba. This is no wonder they are playmates.

Their lifestyle depicts more francophone. Can it be because majority of these tribes are in Francophone countries such as Togo, Burkina Faso and Benin? Yes, exactly so. An area of evidence is their music.

The Gurma ethnic group has music and dance as one of its major aspect of culture. They display this during their happy and sorrowful periods. They use music to sing appellations to their chiefs and other traditional political leaders.

During funerals, music is used to mourn the dead. Dirges are sung tell of the heroic life of the dead.

The traditional musical instruments used by the Gurma are the flute, drums, gong-gong etc.

The Gurma people are also very religious. They believe in a supernatural being "God". However, they believe that God has representatives on earth through whom man can reach Him. They therefore have their community and personal gods. In times of need such as drought, epidemic and calamity, they consult their gods for help.

Occupationally, the Gurma ethnic group is purely agrarian. They produce most of the cereals in their respective countries. The staple food of the Gurma tribes is what is popularly known as TZ. and sour leaf soup.

Politically, they are non centralized. They are usually in small groups and communities.

They are peace loving people whose level of tolerance and peace should be emulated.
