Some popular Electricity terms and its meaning

With all the current fizzles in our electricity supply, its Important to acquaint yourself with some useful terms as used by energy experts.

1. Blackouts

a failure of electrical power supply.

2. Brownouts

a reduction in or restriction on the availability of electrical power in a particular area.

3. Clamping Speed

amount of time it takes a surge protector to react when the clamping voltage has been met or exceeded.

4. Decibels

a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electrical signal by comparing it with a given level on a logarithmic scale.

5. Inline Ups

An uninterruptible power supply, also uninterruptible power source, UPS or battery/flywheel backup, is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails.

6. Low voltage Anything with 50 volts or less is considered low voltage, and thus, wiring that is designed to carry less than 50 volts is considered low voltage wiring

7. Power Surges

An oversupply of voltage from the power company that can last up to 50 microseconds.
