SIM card registration does not require a voter ID.

The voter ID card will not be accepted for SIM card registration, according to the National Communications Authority. The NCA stated in a statement that it has not given mobile network operators and broadband wireless access providers any such instructions.

"In the current SIM registration exercise, there is currently no medium for voter ID registration; the Ghana Card stays the main ID." The NCA was responding to social media posts made by Sam George, a member of the select committee on communications and Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram.

In addition, the authority clarified that discussions had taken place regarding the update of the SIM registration app to permit the temporary use of voter ID. "That development effort will take several weeks, if not months, to complete, and the deep dive technical discussions on the integration effort with the MNOs and BWAs have not even been held," the statement continued. The NCA added that similar efforts to integrate passports have taken more than three months and are still not finished.

The statement continued, "If necessary, the general public will be duly informed when both integration efforts are complete as well as the modalities and conditions of use."
