Most of the time, you start your day, as a student in the dormitory, hostel or even coming home from classes or lectures. You realize that, youalways promise yourself that "I'll be serious today, I'm going to learn hard today, I'm going to complete that topic today". So, you take your book and start learning, but before you realize you have a new Facebook or WhatsApp message. You take your phone to reply to that message, and before you know you are lying on the bed chatting on whatsapp all day, without achieving the earlier said purpose. But don't worry all of that can end today when you learn about the concept of Flow.
Flow is defined as a state in which one is completely immersed in an activity. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced me-HIGH chick-sent-me-HIGH-ee) was born in Fiume, Italy, now Rijeka, Croatia, on September 29, 1934.Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is best for his concept of Flow which he outlined in his 1990 seminal book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience. According to Csikszentmihalyi, the a person enters the state of flow when he really likes or enjoys what he's doing. For example, an artist can paint a picture and lose track of time whiles he paints it, because he enjoys it and it thus becomes his state of Flow. Or when you are playing a video game and you are so absorbed in the game you are playing that, you forget about the environment you are in and you lose track of time.
For one to get into the state of Flow, the activity at hand should be equal to the skill of the individual. So thus, when the skill is greater than the task, the task become less enjoyable to the individual, and if the task is greater than the skill set of the individual the task becomes burdensome and unenjoyable. But one can improve his or her skill set to meet the requirements of the task and this makes entering into the state of Flow easier. Mind you, the state of Flow, is difficult to achieve, easy to maintain and difficult to achieve again when you get distracted.
So in order to get into the state of Flow, you must avoid anything that can be a distraction. And if your distractions are television and mobile phones, I advise you to turn it off. Because it can wait, so in order to achieve the state of Flow as a student who wants to concentrate on his books:
1. You must avoid distraction
As stated earlier, your first and foremost priority is to avoid distractions. We've all been through this stage, when you are about to learn and you receive an unexpected call or a new message on social media. But please, try not to fall for that again because if you do it will be hard for you to achieve your goals. So make sure the atmosphere is quiet and a conducive area for learning.
2. Set alarms
Most of the time, learning seems to be very boring. Because we don't really plan how long we want to study, so when we begin we suddenly feel bored because it doesn't feel like we're having much fun. But, by setting an alarm like say 30 minutes to solve some past questions or to revise your note, you will feel like you are under pressure. Because you are working against time and it will make you feel like you are in an exam hall. So when you don't finish on time you will feel like being given some extra minutes to complete your work. And this really boost your morale as it helps makes the learning process fun for you. This method really works so try it out and you will never be disappointed.
3. Start with subjects or topics you like
Starting with a subject you are weak in or dislike can make it very difficult for you to enter the state of Flow. So I would advise you to begin with subjects or topics you like and set an alarm. So that it when you enter into the state of Flow you can start with subjects that are difficult for you. Note that the state of Flow is a condition in which an individual is totally immersed in an activity that he or she enjoys that nothing else seems to be important. So always start with the subjects you like best to make it easier and faster to achieve the state of Flow.
Be informed that the state of Flow can take just a few minutes or hours to achieve depending on your concentration and the place you choose to learn. The benefits that's that comes from being in the state of Flow are many. Such as :
1. It gives greater happiness to you the individual since you gain a sense of fulfillment after engaging in the activity that you like .
2. It improves creativity: Note that the state of Flow is mostly associated with creative arts like drawing or painting. But it mostly happens because the person doing the activity loves to do it and often does it because of the passion he or she has for it. So it helps improve your creativity by sharpening your skills as you frequently engage in the activity.
3. It develops one's learning ability: As you continuously do what you love and enter into the state of Flow, it helps increase your learning ability. As it enhances your skills and creativity and helps you to find a higher challenge to fit your skills as your skills increases.
"The mark of a person who is in control of consciousness is the ability to focus attention at will, to be oblivious to distractions, to concentrate for as long as it takes to achieve a goal, and not longer. And the person who can do this usually enjoys the normal course of everyday life.”~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1990, p. 31). But know that, it won't always be easy at first trying to use this technique at first. But isn't it that what makes victory "sweet". So whenever you feel discouraged always remember what Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi said and never give up on trying this technique.
Hope you have learned something new. I know that this information will greatly help you when you put it into practical use. Stay safe and thanks for reading, bye.
