Tamale Residents Angry Over Sachet Water Price Increase

The upward adjustment in the prices of sachet water is creating misunderstandings between sellers and consumers in the Tamale community.

Not less than a month ago, bottle water prices have increased as producers find it difficult to maximise profits. A packet of sachet water is now selling at GHC 20 pesewas whilst some sellers sell three packet for GHC 50 pesewas.

A bag of sachet water containing 30 pieces which was sold at GHC 1.50 pesewas is now selling between GHC 3.00 pesewas depending on the producer.

For instance, sachet water produced by Bel Aqua water company limited previously sold at GHC 2.20 a bag now cost GHC 3.20 pesewas.

This adjustment comes a month after the Government statistician , Dr.Philomena Nyarko revealed that the Northern recorded the highest regional year-on-year inflation rate of 21.1 percent for for July 2014.

In her analysis, Dr .Philomena Nyarko attributed the situation to an increase in the price of utilities, currencies, especially the Dollar.

As a need coupled with the high poverty levels associated with most Tamale residents, customers called for a price reduction.

Meanwhile, some retailers of bottled water have threatened to restrict any moves by the government to jeopardise or introduce new taxes on bottled water.
