As an interchange, junctions leading to various roads are the Accra-Nsawam Road; Awoshie-Pokuase Road; Pokuase-Kwabenya-Ritz Junction Roads. It was funded by the African Development Bank and the government of Ghana at an estimated cost of about 84 million dollars.
The sod cutting ceremony for the start of works was done on July, 2018 under this current Nana Addo led government. However there has been a lot of arguments as to which government between the NPP and the NDC deserves credit for this project. According to the former minister of road and highways and MP for Tamale Central, Hon Inusah Fuseini, funds, planning and cost for the construction of the interchange were all done under the Mahama government from the African Development Bank.
To end this debate, what we will say is that, governance is a continuous process and whether funds were secured under the NDC government or was solely done by this government, it is Ghana which wins at the end of the day. We have witnessed various circumstances were projects are abandoned by successive governments because it will credit their predecessors.
This project is being undertaken by Messrs China Zhongmei Engineering Company Limited and the interchange forms part of the Accra Urban Transport Project, aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth for the people in the area.
The interchange has understand vigorous construction phases to become what we are witnessing today to be commissioned by the president.
Today, Nana Addo is set to officially commission the interchange for use by motorist and pedestrians at large.
In attempt to minimize accidents at the interchange due to its complexity, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have deployed personnel around the project to educate road users on its usage. They added that, they will extend it to the next six months ahead which will be the Christmas period to support people to use the facility and get used to it because if we don’t do that, then we will be adding on to the deaths that we are recording.
According to the NRSA, there have been a record of about 1,450 deaths, a 27% increase in road traffic accidents compared to last year.
