2022 Budget: E-Levy Will Overburden the Poor- Johnson Asiedu Tells Gov't

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has posited that the introduction of the Electronic Levy(E-Levy) will negatively affect the poor and further push them along the downward spiral.

Ken Ofori Atta, Ghana's Minister of Finance announced the introduction of the Electronic Levy when he presented the 2022 budget in Parliament on Wednesday.

The Minister revealed that out a population of 30 million, only 2.4 million pay taxes.

The introduction of the Electronic Levy will therefore ensure that majority of Ghanaians are brought into the tax basket.

This policy decision according the chief scribe of the NDC [Johnson Aseidu Nketia] is unacceptable because the the poorest in the society who are already struggling to survive will be overburdened.

He maintained that the best decision is for goverment to introduce a tax policy that will ensure that those who earn more pay more.

In a related development, the minority in Parliament have vowed to resist the new levy. Addressing the press after the presentation of the budget, the ranking member of the Finance Committee of Parliament, Cassiel Atto Forson said the NDC caucus will stand by the people buy ensuring that the budget is well scrutinized.
