Covid, the Russia-Ukraine war was about the economy; the government had lesser expectations - Otumfu

Because the Covid-19 pandemic and the continuing Russia-Ukraine war have driven the world economy into the doldrums, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu Il has warned the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and other labor unions in the country not to raise their expectations of government.

At a special congregation ceremony at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Chancellor made the announcement.

"I urge the administration to maintain its commitment to ensuring that equity is manifested and that citizens are fairly assured and satisfied," he said.

"At the same time, I urge UTAG and all other university unions, as well as civic society at large, to be realistic in their expectations, especially at this time when the world economy is struggling."

The Asante monarch mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. "Know that resources are limited and that we cannot have everything we desire all of the time," he added.

"I hope that dialogue, goodwill and trust,\swhich are essential ingredients in\sresolving conflict, will be applied in all\snegotiations between labour unions and\sgovernment in order to avoid such\sprolonged strike."
