To boost economic activity, every country relies on exports and imports. There are large harbors all over the world where heavy machinery, such as containers, cars, and other items, are transported by sea. The port of Shanghai is the largest in the world, handling 744 million tons of cargo per year, while the port of Durban in Africa handles up to 31.4 million tons of cargo per year.
The port of Abidjan is the largest in West Africa, according to research.
Ghana must always be included in the top ten countries with the busiest ports. Only two harbors, one in the Western region and the other in Accra, are possible. Tema harbor is currently the largest, handling up to 12 million tonnes per year.
The Sekondi Takoradi harbor is also busy, but many people prefer to clear their goods here because Accra is the capital city.
As the first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah oversaw the construction of the Takoradi harbor. Construction started in the 1950s under the direction of Theodore S. Clerk, Ghana's first architect, and was completed and commissioned in 1962.
The same architect, Theodore S. Clerk, also designed the Tema harbor. Tema harbor as of now is the biggest one until a new one would be constructed as it was promised by some politicians year's ago that, a new harbor is going to be put up in Cape Coast and Axim.
Both harbors were recently expanded under the leadership of former president His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.
