Governments workers are the group of people who go through a lot of hardships when the economy situation of the country deteriorates.

Unfortunately, people see most government workers as well to do .Well they might be right to some marginal extent but the greater percentage of this class of people go through a lot .

It is very pathetic the amount of money that some government workers pay as tax from the chicken feed they receive as salaries.

Unfortunately, the inefficiencies in the system is very alarming to the extent that, people who make millions of Ghana cedis in the informal sector probably go tax free while the government worker because their salaries go through the system of the controller and accountant general department is made to pay very dubious and unacceptable amounts as taxes from their meagre salaries.

Sadly, government workers only receive averagely about 10% increment in their salaries every year and they would have to manage their lives with this amount.

Do the calculations yourself and find out 10% of someone whose monthly salary is Ghs1000 and there you will realise how magical some government workers live this country of ours.

As if that is all ,this same 10% attracts income tax, increment in Social security contributions, labour unions membership dues just to mention a few.

So undeniably, this increment have zero impact on the life of the ordinary worker since everything is deducted at source before the rest hits the account of the employee.

This employee would now have to manage this amount till the following year. Unfortunately,it is uncountable the number of times prices of goods and services are increased in the country and they have to absorb all these shocks with this same increment.

Undoubtedly, everyone will admit that, the system is getting very hard and as such, government workers needs a very big push on their salaries in other to have a rippling effect on the general population.

This is because when salaries of government workers are increased, it leads to a corresponding increase in their purchasing powers and this trickles down the value chain.

Critically looking at the situation at hand, any amount not less than 30% will the best as this will go a long way to cushion them in their economic development owing to the increasing hardships that these individuals experience by the day. This will go a long way to lessen the burden that the new taxes that have been introduced will bring.

It is something that is doable and the labour unions should look at this direction too. Unfortunately ,it clearly seem the various government workers are on their own now since there has not been a pesewa in salary increment but there are increments everywhere in prices of goods and services including the introduction of new new taxes.

But nothing has been done about workers salaries ,the nation is likely to be hit by strike actions since the living standards in the country is getting difficult by the day.

Other countries have received post covid stimulus checks and at least if the nation cannot do same, the average worker should not be extra burdened with taxes.
