Residents of Papu in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region have appealed for an irrigation dam in the community. The residents, who made the appeal in an interview at the community, said the dam is necessary in this dry season where the youth can engage in vegetable crops cultivation rather than traveling to the southern sector to engage in activities such as illegal mining. A resident, Ali Isaac noted that even with the little water body they have, the youth are utilizing it saying that, a dam would be a plus.
Mr Isaac stated that the construction of a dam would also enhance the rearing of livestock in the community. He said during the dry season where water becomes scarce, they have to drive their cattle and sheep to the Sankana Dam a nearby community.
The Unit Committee Chairman, Mwinuori Felix, said the youth in the community are fond of farming but the lack of large and dependable irrigation dam forces them to go to ‘galamsey’. He then appeal to the government and NGO to provide them dam.
