Over GH400 million, according to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been lost due to ghost names on the National Service Scheme and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust SSNIT pension plan.
The Vice President claimed that 14,000 ghost names on the NSS and approximately 27,000 ghost pensioners were found on SSNIT.
Due to the lack of a unique identity, the National Service recently discovered 14,000 ghost names. SSNIT discovered 27,000 ghost names just a few days ago, and they were receiving GH327 million in payment. Our expenses for just these two institutions total more than GH400 million.
Dr. Bawumia used the 2021 Civil Service Awards Night in Accra last night to justify his earlier comment about preferring the Ghana Card over a thousand interchanges.
He insisted that a better identification system would assist in dealing with ghost names on government payroll.
It appears that my Ghana card statement was misconstrued. I want people to consider it critically. For the first time in our history, we have a biometric unique identity system that allows us to identify individuals."
"With this, the issue of ghost names in our public sector system will be resolved."
‘I’d choose Ghana card over 1000 interchanges; it’s more impactful’ – Bawumia
On Thursday, July 14, 2022, at the launch of two new high-level information technology programs at Accra Business School, the Vice President stated that he would prefer the Ghana card over 1000 interchanges because the former has a greater impact.
This elicited amusing responses from Ghanaians, who took to social media to mock Dr. Bawumia.
While delivering his goodwill message at the New Patriotic Party's Delegates Conference at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, July 16, 2022, NDC Deputy General Secretary Peter Boamah Otokunor also took a shot at the Vice President.
"Over GH400 million lost to ghost names on SSNIT necessitates the implementation of Unique Identification to end all these unscrupulous acts," the Vice President justified.
