Digital Cedi to be piloted this year - BoG Governor

The Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Maxwell Opoku Adare has stated that the Bank of Ghana will bring a soft cash of the national currency by September this year.

He made this confirmation when he met the media last week to elaborate certain plans the Bank has to help deepen the financial inclusion of all irrespective of ones location, this would help one to trade and use the local currency anywhere, anytime. 

Dr. Maxwell mentioned that plans are far advanced and in The third trimester of this year, his Office would make this dream a reality to help in the digital space and promote competition within the banking sector. 

This action would be regulated by the BOG officials. He added that the BoG is keenly monitoring about 500 of the financial technology companies to try this in the coming days and see the way forward after they have accessed the whole process in months and make some conclusions by the end of year.

The e-Cedi, he mentioned would after reports of its success have been gathered and received at the appropriate time and department would determine the time that it would be made accessible to the public.

He was emphatic that this would go a long way to help in making Ghana a cashless society in the years ahead.
