The Acholi cultural institution put in place the law to limit the amount of money that should be paid as bride price so as to curb exploitation by the bride's parents.
The new law stipulates that any man who wants to marry should not pay anything exceeding UGX 5m (N527k), nothing that anything exceeding that amount would be seen as a gift to the family of the girl.
This became necessary following the rising cost of marriages in the region as men have been forced to forgo their marriage plans due to the inability of meeting up with the demands by the parents of the bride.
