The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Honorable Kwaku Afriyie disclosed that anybody who engages in cocoa farming has locked him or herself in a poverty cycle for thirty (30) years.
According to Honorable Kwaku Afriyie, four (4) huge companies in Ghana and three (3) foreign companies always take up the money earned in trading cocoa into their pockets and this started from the era of the late flight lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to the current president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo never loosed guard and therefore introduced the Living Income Differentiate (LID) to halt the companies' activities against the cocoa farmers.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's policy made the cocoa farmers earn premiums on the cocoa but the foreign companies has taken the premiums off and this is making the cocoa farmers suffer bitterly since they either earn no penny or little when they engage in cocoa farming.
Due to this, Honorable Kwaku Afriyie urged for the deforestation of the cocoa trees in Ghana because anybody who will engage him or herself in cocoa farming has locked him or herself in a poverty cycle for thirty (30) years.
