GNPC should make the allocations for the Rebecca Foundation and "Okyehene" Tree planting- ASEPA

Following the sad incident that happened in our oceans last week where fish was washed ashore in Accra and over 60 dolphins at Axim in the Eastern Region.

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson had disclosed that the fishes died out of stress. From investigation done by Fisheries Commission.

Again, researchers at the University of Ghana has also disclosed that fishes washed ashore was due to low supply of oxygen in the sea making habitation extremely difficult for sea organisms. They also admitted that the nation do not have a research vessel responsible for aquatic research at all.

Mensah Thompson, who is the Executive Director for Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has waded into the conversation petitioned government to levy and acquire a nation research vessel.

In a post, he charged GNPC to make allocations for the Rebecca foundation and the Okyenhene tree planting programe available this year for the acquisition of a research vessel. Percentage of our oil revenue per annum should go into a dedicated fund to fund aquatic and marine research preferably 10% per annum.

We cannot be taken so much from our territorial waters and not give anything back, the condition in our water bodies are fast becoming a ticking time bomb. The oil, a highly non- renewable resources will deplete one day. He stated.
