In Ghana, there is a popular adage in the Akan dialect that goes like ' obi asem boni ye obi asempa'.It literally means ' another man's bad news is another man's good news'...
During the initial stages of the covid-19 pandemic, nose masks, and some EPE's we slightly difficult to come by, and the situation had immediately created a money-making machine for some very smart thinking business-minded citizens.
My own cousin, a fashion designer took advantage of the situation, designed attractive nose masks made from local fabrics, sold each for a whopping GHC 25. Her introduction of nose masks made from local fabrics appeared innovative and she was able to make sales close to GHC60,000 within 2 months before some foreign nose masks began appearing on the market at GHC 5 each. The GHC 5 each nose mask immediately hit hard at her GHC 25 each nose mask and her sales dropped drastically by more than 80% within a week.

At a point, the foreign nose mask's prize dropped to GHC 3. My cousin's sales dropped again until people found it difficult to buy her GHC25 nose masks while others are selling at GHC3 and GHC 2 respectively.
When I spoke to her, she expressed her sadness that her landlord was becoming a nuisance and she desperately wanted money to build a house so urgently that, the covid-19 pandemic has been a money-making machine and she was so happy because it was good news to her and her husband for the opportunity to make money quickly and finance their building project.
However, the appearance of cheaper nose masks on the market had suddenly affected their sales and brought their money-making mechanism to a halt, shattering their dreams and making them so sad. She even told me that the first day she saw the GHC5 nose masks in town, her heart skipped and she couldn't eat the whole day.
Lately, nose masks are selling at GHC1 on the market. I deliberately went on research errands to speak to a few single mothers selling in traffic jams. It came to me that, as a matter of fact, the spreading of the coronavirus is seriously good news to many, especially some jobless section of the general public who have now found a state of survival by entering into the nose masks selling business. A single mother passionately told me, she could now feed her 3 kids well after entering into the selling of nose masks...She said she wishes the covid-19 could stay around for a longer period.
