First female and first black to head the World Trade Organization

Nigerian economist Dr.Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been appointed to head the high office of Director General of the World Trade Organization.

She becomes the first woman and the first African person to ever hold that position in the seventy-three year history of the organisation.

Dr.Ngozi formerly was Finance Minister of Nigeria, a former Managing Director of the World Bank in 2007 and Euromoney Global Finance Minister in 2005.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian-American economist and international development expert.

She sits on the boards of Standard Chartered Bank, Twitter, Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, and the African Risk

She was born on June 13, 1954, in Ogwashi-Ukwu in Delta State, Nigeria.

She announced her joy at the appointment via her twitter @NOIweala with this tweet-

“It is done! Thank you @WTO members for finalizing my election today and making history.

In the 73 years of GATT and WTO, honored to be First Woman and First African to lead.
