A press release from the Office of the Dean of Students' and signed by the Dean of Students' of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) sought to placed a ban on social gatherings in the University of Cape Coast.
Following this release, many students on campus, especially those who happen to be Christians, were left to wonder whether religious activities on campus fall under such categorization.
However, we would recall that in the President's recent address to the nation on the measures taken by government in the fight against COVID-19, President Akufo-Addo happened to place, for the second time, a ban on social gatherings in Ghana.
Following this directive by government, failure to abide by such a directive amounts to lawless and for that matter, anyone who is found to have flouted this directive will be made to face the full rigors of the law.
Even though the University of Cape Coast is an institution which has its own constitution and policies, the constitution of Ghana superintendents over the dictates of the Constitution of the University; and for that matter, every policy or directive by the school is expected to be in consonant with the directives of government.
As a result, it may not be surprising that the directives by the President on banning social gatherings in the country informed this subsequent directive by the Dean of Students' of UCC.
Moreover, in an attempt to help students with an answer to the question of whether religious gatherings in UCC are included in the ban placed on social gatherings in UCC, one may want to consider the fact that following the reopening of the ban on Religious activities by H.E. Akufo-Addo, there has not been any such ban on religious activities.
Therefore, the aforesaid should give a head- lift to our Christian and our Moslem brothers and sisters on UCC campus that, religious activities are not part of the 'Ban on Social Gatherings Directive' by Professor Eugene Darteh, the Dean of Students' of the University of Cape Coast.
