MoE Reverted To Trimester After Listening To Union Leaders And Teachers - MoE PRO

Kwasi Kwarteng, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education in response to why his outfit reverted to the trimester system of education at the basic level told the public that it was as a result of listening to union leaders and teachers.

Mr. Kwarteng wrote on his official Facebook handle the following,“… therefore, after listening to union leaders and teachers expressing their preference for the trimester system, the Minister for Education directed GES to revert to the Trimester system.”

Again, he noted that the extension of the two-semester to cover primary and kindergarten levels was as a result of parents who had to make separate arrangements for their wards in both primary and kindergarten. “ Semester system was introduced by GES last year at the JHS level; To remove challenges facing parents who had to make different child care arrangements for their wards in Primary and JHS, they justified its extension to primary school.” He noted.

However, he made the point clear about the reversal to trimester that neither trimester nor two-semester system has an advantage over the other in terms of students learning outcomes.“ Both systems have no inherent advantage in terms of student learning outcomes.” He said.

Background

The Ministry of Education on January 21, 2022, in the late hours of Friday changed the academic calendar from two semesters to a trimester system (the old system). Since then, teachers and stakeholders have described the decision as good, even though a section of them also poured out their frustration towards GES and MoE.
