Postpone reopening of schools to June 2021

Ghana and the rest of the world have experienced unusual times. The corona virus pandemic that hit the world like a thunderbolt would continue to remain fresh on the minds of every Tom, Dick and Harry even at old age.

Most countries experienced total lockdown while others had partial lockdown as the pandemic continued spreading like wild fire. Many countries experienced a lot of human mortality as a result of the virus.

All activities ranging from sports, traveling, education, businesses and many more came to a standstill. This was to reduce the rate at which the virus was spreading globally.

Ghana was not left out. All the activities mentioned above were also closed in Ghana. However, sporting activities, businesses and travelling have resumed. Educational institutions are the only areas that are still closed. This is due to the large number of students in the various institutions.

However, the government is planning to reopen all educational institutions in January 2021. The new corona virus active cases according to the president's 20th update stood at 946.

Reopening schools in early January might lead to the resurgence of the virus. The ministry of education should not rush into opening schools due to pressure from the Ghanaian populace. They should wait for the virus cases to decline drastically before they open academic institutions. Looking at the large number of students in our schools, it would be difficult to do contact tracing if one student tests positive to the virus.

The ministry of education in collaboration with other stakeholders of education should therefore postpone the reopening of schools to somewhere June. However, they should provide facilities for the schools so the can resort to online learning. They should also provide students in the tertiary institutions with laptops so they can access the online platforms. Our lives are more important. Let's save our lives first.

God bless our homeland Ghana!

And make our nation great and strong!
