Exclusive:University of Cape Coast SRC aids Student Entrepreneurs with funds.

After the 1st version in 2017, it has taken the Student Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) four (4) years to come up with the 2nd version of the ‘Africa’s Biggest Idea Challenge’. The challenge is meant to nurture and give funds for student entrepreneurs to start-up or expand their existing businesses. This year’s version was themed “Growing Ghana Beyond Aid through Enterprise Development; Student Entrepreneurship in Focus.”

This year’s program started with opening of online application where all student entrepreneurs of UCC were qualified to apply. At the closing date of the application which was 11th October, 2021, over hundred entrepreneurs had registered to get the chance to compete for cash prizes.

Afterward, pitching began where the entrepreneurs presented their ideas to the judges of the competition. Upon careful discerning, twenty-seven (27) businesses qualified to the next stage of the competition (the semi-final stage). This number was reduced to eleven (11) after the semi-final pitching. These eleven (11) businesses were to compete for the ultimate prize at the finals of the competition. The finalists include:

The finals stage of this great competition took place on the Friday 10th of September, 2021 at the CELT Auditorium 900 in UCC. Many dignitaries from all walks of life came to witness the program. After the final pitching were done before the judges and the entire audience at the program, SARTOM INSECTARY emerge as winner of the competition with CHICHI D’ROSAM and ZEINAGS ORGANICS emerging as the 1st runner up and 2nd runner up respectively.

Cash prizes of GHS10,000, GHS7,000 and GHS4,000 were given to the businesses for their positions as 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the competition respectively. Other prizes including hampers and coupons to eat at a restaurant were offered to all the finalist. The owner of ZEINAGS ORGANICS emerged as the best female entrepreneur where she received an unknown amount of money from the Special Guest of Honor for the program, Hon. Joe Ghartey (MP Essikado Kentan Constituency).

Our media thanks the SRC for offering this platform to student entrepreneurs to bring out their ideas and receive funds and coaching needed to start-up their businesses. This platform we belief, goes beyond offering start-up for winners of the competition. It inspires all student entrepreneurs on this campus and beyond, that there is hope and a greater chance for their ideas to gain recognition, receive shaping and funds. We plead with up-coming SRC executives to continue and take a step to improve upon this program. Ayekoo to the SRC and CONGRATULATIONS to the winner, SARTOM INSECTARY.
