It has been over a month and counting since Miskiya E/A Primary School, located at the heart of Tamale, the northern regional capital, had its roof completely ripped off by rain storm. Located at Zagyuri, a suburb of the Sagnarigu Municipality, officials from the Ghana Education Service and the Municipal Assembly have visited the school and left and no significant help have come to alleviate the plight of the institution and it pupils. As makeshift structures are not enough to accommodate all the students of the school, some of them are forced to learn under the roofless classrooms, exposing them to the ruthless and scorching Savanna sun.
A teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimization said the situation has badly affected teaching and learning as they are forced to send the children home at slightest signs of the early wet season’s rains. He said some of the students have collapsed because of dehydration as a result studying long hours under the sun. The teacher said the school has effectively been abandoned as all efforts by teachers and even the chief of the Zagyuri Community to have relevant Authorities intervene have proven futile. He disclosed that some of his colleagues have begun seeking transfer away from the school, saying that if the situation is not resolved they will soon be no teacher to educate the children.
Checks at the Sagnarigu Municipal Office of the Ghana Education Service show that the challenge of the school has been brought to their attention but an official said their hands are tight as they have not made any headway since laying the issue before the municipal Assembly for redress. He disclosed that his office have been told that until there is a substantive Municipal Chief Executive appointed nothing can be done for Miskiya Islamic Primary School.
