Accommodation Supplement is a monthly payment that helps people with their rent or the cost of owning a home, in calculating your entitlement to accommodation supplement, work and income will only consider 62 per cent of your SSNIT contributions as an accommodation cost.
In section 18 of the Collective Agreement by the teachers union, the unions proposed a transportation and accommodation allowance to be paid to the teaching and non-teaching staff in the service, with the current state of the economy whereby teachers salary remains unchanged after the four percent (4%) increment, teachers called on the union leaders to facilitate the payment of transportation and accommodation allowance to enable them ease the financial burdens as a result of high cost of living.
The following allowances have been approved to be paid to teachers which will be captured in the midyear budget. Maintenance and Mileage allowance, the maintenance allowance has been in existence in the Ghana Education Service, but teachers have not been paid with such allowance, this allowance is for staff in Ghana Education Service who owns vehicles. This allowance is paid once in a year. To be qualified for this allowance, a staff will need to provide the documentation of the vehicle including forms A and C. Payment of this allowance is set to be factored in the employee's pay slip by Controller and Accontant General Department (CAGD). Teachers without means of transport will be provided with a transportation card, a bus service will be provided for staff on certain routes in the country.
Accommodation is free for teaching and non-teaching staff who occupied bungalows in the school, teachers who rent outside the schools will be paid accommodation allowance which will be factored in their payslips. Meals will be served for teachers in the Senior High Schools to avoid teachers using the contact hours to search for food.
Teaching comes with many of the additional benefits of most careers. Again, this can vary widely depending on where you work, but generally speaking, teachers are entitled to insurance for themselves and their families, including medical, dental and vision coverage. They are also entitled to sick days and paid leave.
Teachers' Welfare can be seen as the availability of recourses and presence of conditions required for reasonable, comfortable, healthy and secure living for teachers which include good working condition, a secured environment for academic business, regular promotion, in-services training, regular payment of salary and among others. This will a be a good initiative if implemented, the teaching profession will attract more graduates and professional teachers, teachers who see the profession as a stepping stone to look for better jobs will be retained in the service.
