Teachers in the Kumasi metro have called off their intended demonstration against the metro Director of the Ghana Education Service, the intended demonstration was to express their dissatisfaction with the new policies introduced by the metro Director. The metro Director's timely intervention has quenched the fire.
Among the Director's policies which the teachers stood against include, the reporting and closing time for the basic schools in the metropolis. The Director instructed headteachers to issue query letters to teachers who report to school after 7 am, the closing time which is 2 pm for all public basic schools was extended to 3 pm and the monies deducted from capitation grants for the printing of examination question papers. One of the Circuit Supervisors deployed by the director to appeal to the teachers to call off their planned demonstration, told the teachers in his circuit, the reporting time to school that was captured in the director's policy was 7:30 am, the reporter erred in quoting 7 am.
The Circuit Supervisors were able to convince the teachers to call off their planned demonstration, they sought the views of teachers as to how the matter can be resolved amicably. The teachers told the Circuit Supervisors, per Ghana Education Service guidelines, instructional hours for basic schools start from 8 am and ends at 2 pm, so they want the director to reverse the new instructional hours back to the standard instructional hours by Ghana Education Sevice.
The director promised the teachers to restored the standard instructional hours, the teachers accepted and called off their plan demonstration. There are three basic styles of leadership decision-making: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire. Authoritarian leaders rule their groups, democratic leaders try to include everyone in the decision-making process, and laissez-faire leaders let the group function without much if any interference. Democratic leadership, also known as participative leadership or shared leadership, is a type of leadership style in which members of the group take a more participative role in the decision-making process. This type of leadership can apply to any organization, from private businesses to schools to the government. The teachers have pushed the director to change his leadership style.
The director should have listened to the views of the teachers before coming out with such policies, the idea behind the policies were good but its implementation was very poor. Considering the traffic situation in the metro, issuing a query letter to teachers who report to school few minutes after 7 am was wrong. The teachers will be happy when their students excel in the BECE and they will give out their best.
