Teachers Union To Reject GES Semester Based System By Saying They Were Not Consulted.

Teacher Unions in the basic education sector thus GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU, and CCT-GH have kicked against the government’s decision to change the trimester-based academic calendar of the basic schools to a semester-based system.

According to the teachers union, the ministry of education has not consulted them in taking this major decision which they think should have been negotiated to reach a consensus.

“We state emphatically that at no point in time were the Unions in Education consulted on such a major policy decision. Per our Collective Agreement about our working conditions, major policies such as this should come for discussion and negotiation.” They stated.

They noted that such an academic calendar could hurt both the teachers and the pupils so they, therefore, called on the government to reconsider that decision or they will fiercely reject it.

“We, therefore, call on the GES to immediately withdraw the policy, pending full consultations with the Unions in Education and other major stakeholders and do serve notice, that failure to do so would be resisted fiercely,” - they added.
