The distribution of Teachers Laptop has been extended to cover Basic School Teachers, with the extension, all teachers in the country will be assisted to own a laptop for digital literacy.
Katon Technologies, the manufacturers of Teacher's Mate1 laptop have distributed over fifty thousand laptops to teachers in the second cycle schools, majority of the teachers are yet to received their laptops.
One-Teacher-One laptop initiative by government is to support teachers to acquire laptop at affordable price, Teacher Unions negotiated with the government to assist teachers to acquire laptop for digital learning. The project was earmarked to cover teachers in the second cycle schools, teachers in the basic schools were left out in the one teacher one laptop project. With the one teacher one laptop project, Government of Ghana is paying seventy percent of the cost of the laptop while teachers pay the remaining thirty percent, leaving basic school teachers out does not make the project a complete project.
Teachers in the basic schools petitioned the Ministry of Education for inclusion of the one teacher one laptop project, Ghana Education Service has extended the distribution of the Teacher's Mate1 laptop to cover all teachers in the country to promote digital literacy among teachers and students.
Katon Technologies, the manufacturers and sole distributors of Teacher's Mate one laptop has been tasked to conduct a training workshop for teachers, the Teacher's Mate one laptop has been loaded with educational resources, Teacher's resource pack. The manufacturers and distributors of the Teacher's Mate1 laptop have designed a training program for teachers, teachers have the choice to choose the method of the training that best suit them, the training includes face-to-face training session, online training and recorded video tutorials.
All subjects in the new curriculum from basic to the secondary level and textbooks have been loaded on the Teacher's Mate one laptop. Some teachers are not happy with the brand of the laptop for the one teacher-one- laptop project, teachers who have received the laptop have been deducted the thirty percent cost from their annual teacher professional development allowance.
