Breaking News: KG, Primary And JHS School Calendar Reversed To Trimester System By MOE

The Ministry Of Education (MOE) has reversed the semester calendar system to trimester system for all basic schools in Ghana. This was done after meeting with the various stakeholders in Education.

In a letter released on Friday, 21st January 2021 and signed by Felix A. Baidoo the Press Secretary the MOE said;

"It may be recalled that the Ministerial Committee on School Calendar issued a calendar for the current academic year indicating that Kindergarten to Junior High School was to be based on the Semester system."

Following the directives to commence the Semester system, the Ministry has received representation from a section of the public and key educational stakeholders to re-instate the Trimester system.

The letter revealed that, after further consultation on the issue was done the Honourable Minister for Education has directed that the calendar for Kindergarten to Junior High School for the current academic year should revert to the Trimester system.

It added that, Consequently, the dates for the various school terms for Kindergarten to Junior High School are as follows:

1st TERM

First term will be observed from18th January 2022 to 14th April, 2022. A total of 12 weeks will be spent.

Vacation for first term will start from 15th April 2022 to 9th May 2022.

Second Term

It will begin from 10th May 2022 to 19th August 2022. A total of 14 weeks will be spent.

Vacation: 19th August 2022 to 12th September, 2022

Third Term

13th September to 22nd December 2022. A total of 14 weeks will be spent.

This come as a background to the change in the entire basic school academic calendar to a semester based. Many parents and stake holders were against the changes. GNAT and other teacher unions were of the view that the semester based system was not good for the development of the learners. Perhaps teachers and parents will be satisfied with the reverse in the initial decision.
