Examiners to enjoy Pay rise as WAEC increases Marking Allowance

WAEC Increases Script Marking Allowance for Examiners, marking of the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is currently ongoing in all the WAEC centers in the country. Coordination and Group marking was done in all the regional centers of WAEC, Examiners have been given the scripts to mark and present them to their team leaders and Chief Examiners for vetting.

The last time WAEC increased the marking allowance was 2017, since then Examiners have called on the council to consider the current economic conditions in the country and raise the allowance a little bit.

The 2021 scripts marking allowance has been raised by 30% effective November 2021, Examiners marking this year’s WASSCE examinations will enjoy the new rate.

The rate for the marking before the 30% increment: Marking of practical test, Languages and Mathematics attracts four cedis per script, marking of other scripts are three cedis twenty pesewas (GHS 3.20). Examiners are paid with a transportation allowance per kilometers determined by the council, the transportation allowance is paid for the three days coordination meeting.

Assistant Examiners have to travel to the center to pick the scripts to their various homes and mark, they scripts are sent back to the team leader for vetting before they are submitted to the council. The allowances paid to examiners are taxed by government.

Assistant Examiners can mark a maximum of four hundred scripts while Chief Examiners and team leaders mark a maximum of five hundred scripts. The Chief Examiners goes through the scripts marked by the team leaders and make the necessary corrections while the team leaders also supervise the the scripts of Assistant Examiners.

The allowance is paid after the Examiner has been cleared for completing the marking and submitting all marking schemes to the council. Examiners are not allowed to take the marking scheme but some Examiners make photocopies of the marking scheme. Invigilators and Supervisors have also called on the council to increase their allowance.
