Salary Scale of University Lecturers In Ghana-2022/23

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) is still on strike following a declaration they made on 10th January 2022. According the association the purpose of their industrial action is to demand better conditions of service. In wake of these, this article seeks to reveal about how much lecturers in public universities in Ghana earn.

The salary of University lecturers in 2022/2023 in Ghana typically ranges from GHC 18,000 to GHC 10,000 per annum.

Just like that of the Ghana Education Service (GES), university lecturers are also paid based on the rank they hold. To go into the exact salaries they earn, let's take a look at their ranks.

Salary Of Lower Ranks Lectures

Graduate Assistant, Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer II, and Lecturer I are lecturers considered to be in the lower cadre. In other words, these ranks are considered to be lower ranks. Lecturers in this category earn between GHC2,000 – GHC3,000 per month. Lecturers in this rank earn between GHC18,000 – GHC42,000 per annum.

Salary Of Senior Rank Lecturers

As revealed by EduWatch's Executive Director, Kofi Asare, After spending 10 years in university, from Level 100 to PhD, a senior lecturer earns between GHC 5,000-GHC 6,000 per month. The annual income of lecturers at this rank is estimated to be GHC 60,000–GHC 72,000.

Salary Of Professors

Associate Professor, professor, and Emeritus Professor (Retired) are considered the higher ranks of lecturers in universities in Ghana and they receive the highest salaries of all. The monthly salary of professors is estimated to be GHC 8,000–GHC 8,400, with GHC 96,000–GHC 10,000 as an annual income.

It should be noted that aside the salaries received by the university lecturers, they also paid some allowances. A typical example is book and research allowances paid by the government.
