Basic School Teachers in the Country Petition Ghana Education Service

Basic school teachers in the country have petitioned the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service over neglect of government initiative for teachers which the basic school teachers have been ignored for so many years. There are a lot of benefits which has been granted to the teachers in the Senior High Schools in the country and these benefits should be extended to the teachers in the basic schools.

For a teacher to be qualified to teach in the Senior High School, the teacher is expected to hold at least a first degree in the subject area, the program of study at the degree level should be a teachable subject in the Senior High School, the least qualification to teach in the Senior High School. The majority of teachers in Senior High Schools are teachers who have upgraded themselves through further studies on study leave. Every year, Ghana Education Service release an approved list of programs of study that qualified teachers to be granted study leave. Teachers on study leave are paid with their full salaries while in school for a period of three to four years. The reason for the government to pay their full salaries while they are out of work is to retain them in the Ghana Education Service. The program of study that is not included in the study leave approval list will deny the teacher from going for further studies, any teacher who goes on further studies without study leave approval is considered as a vacation of post and the teacher will be deleted from the Ghana Education Service payroll. The reason is that such teachers may not return to the classroom, their program of study will fetch them better jobs.

In the petition to the Minister of Education, the basic school teachers have questioned the rationale behind the government one teacher, one laptop initiative for Senior High School teachers, the laptops have been pre-installed with electronic textbooks, template for lesson notes preparation, template for a scheme of work, curriculum from Kindergarten to Senior High School, etc. The exclusion of basic school teachers should be reversed with immediate effect.

Academic Intervention allowance, the basic school teachers have petitioned the minister of Education to include them in the payment of academic intervention allowance, they also engage students in academic intervention.

One teacher, one laptop initiative. The name of the policy implies that all teachers must be given a laptop, so why only Senior High School teachers, all teachers should be considered for the one laptop, one teacher initiative. The laptops are ready for distribution to teachers in the seven hundred second cycle schools, each teacher will pay GHS 37 a month for 12 months which represent 30% of the cost of the laptop. The full cost per laptop is GHS1550.
