The academy calendar of various universities in Ghana has been hugely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Ordinarily, the academic calendar of universities in Ghana starts in September. But this has to be altered by the various universities when the world was struck by the pandemic in March 2020. Schools were closed, and academic activities had to be moved online for them to complete the 2019/2020 academic year albeit with several challenges. Students were forced to stay home for nearly a year before coming back to school in January.
The traditional system whereby all universities in Ghana and end their academic calendar around the same time has also been affected. For instance, to reduce overcrowding in the various classroom, the University of Ghana adopted a double track system, where two levels are in the school at a given semester. The other universities however accommodated all the students at a go.
All the tertiary institutions in Ghana have sold their admission forms. But are the universities going to admit fresh students this year? No, if you ask me. The following are the reasons why I think the public universities will not admit fresh students in 2021;
1. The industrial strike the University Teachers Association of Ghana embarked upon has shifted the academic calendar forward. Examinations which was scheduled to have taken place earlier will now be taken at a later date. This will not make it convenient for schools to resume in October as planned by some schools. The University of Ghana for instance will end its academic year somewhere around December.
2. The delay in the writing of the West African Senior Secondary School Examination (WASSCE). The students from the SHS who are to transition to the university as level 100s are now taking their examination. And based on what we have witnessed over the years, the West African Examination Council, WAEC will release the results around the end of the year.
Based on the aforementioned reasons, it is safe to say the academic year of public universities will begin in 2022.
