Accra College of Education was formerly called Accra Teacher Training College (ATTRACO). It was established on 8th September, 1909 and officially opened on 15th November, 1962 in a one storey building at Accra New Town as Government Teacher Training College. The College was founded as a day training College with 19 students and 8 members of staff, notable among them were Messrs Kodjo Haizel and F N Gbebie both of whom became principals of the College. The college was relocated at its present site at East Legon on 15th January,1985. It then became a boarding institution in 2001.
Accra college of Education is one of the 46 public colleges of education in Ghana. The college is currently running the following programs/courses as a result of the introduction of the bachelor degree programs in the various colleges across the country.
I) Mathematics Education
II) Early Childhood Education and
III) French Education
In spite of the fact that ACCE remained the only day teacher training college in the country until 2001, it performance both academically and professionally cannot be underestimated. It has produced many teachers who are contributing their quota in several sphere of national development.The college is now blessed with well dedicated young and energetic tutors who are dedicated wholeheartedly to give off their best to help groom teachers for mother Ghana under of Dr Samuel Awinkene Atintono (current principal)
The college has well ventilated structures ranging from lecture blocks, Library, well resourced ICT Lab with internet connectivity, to Halls of residence among others. ACCE is among the best colleges of education in the country which can be said to have the most quality learning environment. The totality of surrounding condition of the college is always free of noise and disturbances.There are shrubs all over the campus which beautify and provide friendly and informal atmosphere for students learn.
