Submit this key data latest by Thursday, 9th September, 2021 - GES tells staff

One of the pressing challenges confronting our educational institutions is inadequate infrastructure. Basic Schools are mostly affected when it comes to inadequate or poor infrastructure.

Ghana Education Service has sent templates and links to District Statistics and Planning Officers. The links are to be forwarded to Heads of Basic Schools. Headteachers are to study and fill the forms in relation to infrastructure available in their respective schools. The completed forms are to submitted to the District Statistics and Planning Officers before the close of work on Thursday, 9th September, 2021.

Key among the information needed are name of school, number of classrooms, number of delapidated classrooms and number of classrooms in good condition.

Others are number of teachers bungalows, number of toilets and urinals.

One Statistics and Planning Officer in the Ashanti Region wrote: "Kindly login into the link and provide the necessary information. Please the links are three. That is, Kindergarten (KG), Primary and Junior High Schools. Please provide information where applicable. The District Education Directorate is waiting for your speedy responses. Deadline for submission is Thursday, 9th September, 2021".

The state and condition of some of our basic schools is nothing to write home about. A delapidated school block may have at least one of the following:

1. Roof been partially or fully ripped off by heavy rainstorm

2. Deep cracks in the wall

3. Porous roof

Staff accommodation in basic schools is almost not existing. Teachers who stay in school bungalows are usually levied in the name of regular maintenance. An example of this practice is currently ongoing in the Offinso North District of the Ashanti Region.

It remains to be seen what the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service would do about this alarming data as Headteachers have been filling the annual school census questionnaires forms.
