The conversation about student engagement revolves around a seemingly simple, common sense belief, when a student is invested in the learning process, they learn more. Teachers, parents, and coaches can tell countless anecdotes about the change in skill performance after a student’s motivation to learn the skill increased or intensified.
In education, student engagement refers to the degree of attention, curiosity, interest, optimism, and passion that students show when they are learning or being taught, which extends to the level of motivation they have to learn and progress in their education.
The students' academic performance depends on a number of socio-economic factors like students' attendance in the class, family income, mother's and father's education, teacher-student ratio, presence of trained teacher in school, sex of the student, and distance of schools.
Research has shown that the top four factors that impact student achievement are: classroom management, teaching for learning, home and parent involvement, and believing that all students can learn. Most things in life are pretty simple, but they are usually not easy.
Types of Learners engagement in School
Procedural engagement. Using procedures accurately, but without a deeper understanding of why one is performing such procedures.
Conceptual engagement. Understanding why the concept or tool works the way it does, but with little appreciation for how to apply it in the world.
Consequential engagement. Connecting solutions with implications, and recognizing the value of disciplinary tools to achieve particular consequences in the world.
Critical engagement. Questioning whether the disciplinary tools being employed are appropriate for the particular solution in terms of the particular problem being addressed.
