College Education

Mphil Not Regarded by GES, No Rank for it in the System

The Ghana Education Service has brought several reforms in it including changing the basic education system to a pre tertiary system, a new carriculum has been introduced into the system and the focus of Basic education is now on technical studies and skill acquisition.

Some teachers have also been provided laptops to aid in delivery of lectures when it comes to the educational reforms.

Though there have been agitations after an amount of Ghc509 was deducted, the Service has assured that Ghc44 which was an over deduction has to be returned.

The various teachers within Senior high schools have already received their laptops whilst those in Junior High Schools and Primary will receive theirs in January and February respectively.

A training workshop was organized beginning 12th January to 14th January to equip teachers with the needed skills for effective teaching and learning.

Meanwhile teachers are entitled to Technical Allowance which is 50% of their base salary yet no Technical teacher has ever received that money, this is for Science, Maths and ICT Teachers in the Service.

Teachers are also entitled to Vehicle Fuel Allowance yet how to get it is a problem. Some other teachers are entitled to disability allowance yet they hardly get it.

The teaching service does not accept Masters certificates, once you have masters certificate it's for fun, it isn't taken seriously, you just have to leave the service to get a different job, this has resulted in several teachers leaving the service, Teaching sector should be an avenue to upgrade one's self and add more value to one's self, but in GES, once you do that, it becomes Unusual.

You just have to keep holding that first degree till you retire. The system is changing, what is the service doing about that requirement, colleges are now to soon award degree and this will end the need for a study leave, it means government has to open the window for masters to be accepted. At least ADI with masters will be encouraging enough. Before I end it, the teachers associations should work on getting teachers their technical allowances.
