UPDATE On The National Standardised Test For Basic 4 Learners

The Ghana Education has met with some key stakeholders in education like the Ministry of Education and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) ahead of the upcoming national standardised test for all basic four learners in both public and private schools nationwide.

The meeting was held yesterday and many issues were discussed stemming from the modalities and strategies to be used for the standardised test which is the first of its kind in Ghana's educational system.

For those who have doubted the implementa-tion of the national test to be conducted by WAEC, this news goes a long way to prove that the test will surely be conducted for learners in early November this year.

As we all know, the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has said loud and clear that the test is going to evaluate basic four learners on whether they can read or not as well as help the government to see the challenges confronting the country’s educational system.

All basic four learners will be examined on two major subjects-Literacy and Mathematics, and the results passed on to their parents for their perusal. Despite this, a sample of the standardised questions is yet to be sent to the various District Directors of Education for onward distribution to the basic school head teachers before it commences in November 2021.

While the test has been praised by teachers because the results will be used by both parents and the government to make informed decisions about learners' academic achievements, in contrast, some have complained about the lack of textbooks in our public schools across the country for teaching and learning which plays a major role in the school system.

I think the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service should appeal to the government as a matter of urgency, supply textbooks to all public schools because it is long overdue.
