The Ghana government in collaboration with the West African Examination Council has released the timetable for 2020 Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates after the closure of schools for weeks as a measure for curbing the spread of the deadly Corona virus
As a result of the suspension 2019/2020 academic calendars of all levels of education in Ghana was affected.
On the 16th of March, the deadly Covid-19 virus that putted the world unrest also hitted Ghana on its eyes. The president after consulting stakeholders in the health department saw it ideal to lockdown some parts of the nation spotted as hot spots and laid a ban on some activities that involves human contacts which will lead to the spread of the virus. This caused a closure to all schools in the length and breadth of the country. At that moment, the third years Junior High were preparing strongly to face the Basic Education Certificate Examination that takes place every year to lead them to the secondary schools.
The examination without an amendments or interference of anything is usually written in the May/June of every year and that of the twin year 2020 was expected to have taken place on the same year.
But the pandemic caused all that the Council has plan in vain. It brought a total uncertainty to all the stakeholders (West African Examination Council, teachers,students and parents).Seeking to know when the Examination will start, a radio interview monitored by prime news Ghana, Public Affairs Officer of West African Examination Council National Office, Winifred Ampiaw said the Basic Education Certificate Examination will come off in May/June
”For the Basic Education Certificate Examination ,the exams it will come off in May/June and so we will also come out officially and let them know what the situation will be in regards to that. This was said with the hope that the pandemic would have decline as experts said it has reach its peak. As the numbers kept increasing, it became a bad decision to lift the ban. On the 31st of the month of May in the president's address, the ban was partially lifted on education. The third years of every level of education was to prepare to write their examination observing all protocols laid down by the president and medical experts. First to take the share of the Examination is the Junior High 3 pupils from Monday 14th September to 19th September 2020 . The Basic Education Examination candidates will be first to write Examination with nose masks put on and social distancing.
