The Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) together with Nigerian parents have registered their resentment over the WASSCE rating of the 2020 West Africa Examination Council where 3 Ghanaian students got all the awards across West Africa.
This is the top International Excellence Award instituted by WAEC where the trio, Cecil Tettey Kumah, Godfred Aseda Obeng and Afua Manukure Ansa, took the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position respectively at the 69th annual meeting of the organization held in Accra.
The General Secretary of the NUT, Dr. Mike Ene, in an interview on Nigeria Tribune described the development a big shame. "He explained how Ghanaian students used to struggle for academic excellence. Excelling to this stage is fine, but what many Nigerians don't understand is why all 3 awards were won by only Ghanaian students. The Nigerian student population is about 70% across West Africa. Such a decision is a bit worrying," he said.
The National President of Nigeria's Parent-Teacher Association of Nigeria (NPTAN), Haruna Danjuma also pointed to some key areas that needed attention such as inadequate infrastructure, learning tools, low morale amongst workers, students' laziness, and above all, poor government funding saying that until the government approaches the issue holistically, Nigeria will continue to lag behind in the education sector.
