The Education think-tank, Africa Education Watch has revealed that many Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutes have been under-subscribed to the Computerized School Selection and Placement System because they are day schools.
According to the education watch, only students within a particular perimeter can or would opt. The organization will therefore engage the parliament and the Ministry of Education on the need to provide boarding facilities in technical institutes.
“In our recently launched From Report which we would be engaging Parliament and the MOE on, we underscored the need to provide boarding facilities in Technical Institutes.
They further indicated that students who are placed in schools without accommodation put much burden on poor families.
They are therefore suggesting to the government to build dormitories in TVET Institutes would help increase the current 6% secondary TVET ratio to the levels in Europe.
“As things stand now, the above-mentioned schools are day with students paying for their accommodation, which is beyond the capability of many poor families.
Providing dormitories in TVET Institutes would help increase the current 6% secondary to ratio to the levels in Europe, thereby curbing post-secondary youth unemployment”, they added.
