Teacher Unions Strike is Unlawful - National Labour Commission

The Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission (NLC), Mr Ofosu Asamoah has stated that though it is the right of the teacher Unions to go on strike the approach is "unlawful".

Mr. Asamoah who pleaded with the striking teachers to call off the strike and go back to the classroom while they engage government on their demands established that he appreciates the reason for their demand but the Unions did not inform the National Labour Commission and their employers before embarking on the strike. He said by the provisions of the law you don't use press conference to initiate strike actions but to inform the appropriate institutions. Failure to do that makes the action unlawful.

According to Mr. Ofosu Asamoah, the strike is 'unlawful' because the unions did not engage the National Labour Commission and the Ghana education services through proper notification. The Ghana education is the employer and therefore the teacher unions should have first written to them official.
