Leaked WASSCE Papers Were Sold Between GHC 30 & GHC 150 Per Paper — EduWatch

The past WASSCE examination has been widely criticized by members of the public, including Civil Societies due to the widespread leakage of examination questions and the quest for final year students wanting “apor” to write their final papers at all cost. One of such groups is the Africa Education Watch (EduWatch), an Education Research and Advocacy Organization based in Ghana and some West African countries.

The Advocacy Organization has revealed in their latest report on the monitoring of the 2020 West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and their findings are worth to talk about. The monitoring was done in two parts, an online and school based. The group revealed that a multi-million enterprise thrives online, where question papers believed to be the actual examination questions were sold between GHC 30 and GHC 150 for each paper.

Their findings noted that there were over twenty rogue social media groups created on Telegram, with a combined subscription base numbering two hundred thousand in all (200k). Most of the leaked question papers came from these social media groups, the report noted.

According to EduWatch, several stakeholders in Education including teachers, parents, invigilators, security officials, headteachers, WAEC Supervisors play key roles in the sustenance of examination malpractices including the leakage of examination questions. The report also mentioned that the driving force behind this menace is the nature of Ghana's external assessment, where one becomes a failure based on a 90-minute test after spending fourteen years schooling. This drives candidates to pass the examination at all cost of he wants to remain in formal education.

It is time WAEC ends this menace once and for all to save their reputation from falling into the pit. Most final year students become so dependent on questions papers to the extent that they will do whatever it takes to get them.

Sadly, when the actual paper leaks, the paper is canceled after it has been written. This oftentimes goes against those who truly learned for the paper without any “apor” are at the losing end. Their time and energy is wasted as a result. Personnel engaged in the leakage of papers should be dealt with by the law to deter others.
