Public university labour unions threats to stop working over working conditions

Striking Teacher Unions remain adamant to call off strike until 20% COLA is paid

Public university labor unions, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH), and the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), have given the government a one-week deadline to settle the outstanding allowance, after which they will cease providing services.

According to the four unions, the government is withholding payment of their book and research allowances, among other things.

At a press conference in Accra, the unions expressed their opinion that their working conditions have been excessively varied at their expense with the intent of applying the same conditions selectively without their knowledge.

They assert that this violates the Memorandum of Understanding they signed on June 16, 2021.

The concerned labor unions warn their entire membership to maintain composure and resolve because they will fight any attempt by the employer to change the conditions of their contract without following the proper procedures.

The Unions also take this chance to urge the Employer to exercise caution, noting that while we don't relish upsetting the academic schedule, we won't hesitate to do so if necessary. Therefore, the Employer should immediately revoke its intention to change our terms of service; otherwise, teaching and related activities will cease on all campuses as of Wednesday, October 5, 2022, they stated at a press conference.

All of the affected labor unions are urging their members to maintain composure and steadfastness and are warning them that they will fight any attempts by the employer to change the terms of their agreed-upon Conditions of Service without following the proper procedures.
