Accept Postings To Rural Areas — Education Minister Charges Trained Teachers

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister for Education has charged Newly Qualified Trained Teachers (NQT) to accept postings to all places, especially in the rural areas where their services are needed. They will be posted upon successfully completing their mandatory national service starting November this year.

In a joint engagement with the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance which was held recently, the Minister also reaffirmed the government's continuous preference for trained teachers from the various Colleges of Education anytime there is recruitment. He added that Qualified Trained Teachers are up until now considered first whenever it comes to employing teachers into the classrooms.

The leadership of TTAG was assured of securing employment into the Education Service by the Deputy Finance Minister despite the Education Ministry presenting a total of 40,039 personnel including Teaching, Non-Teaching and university graduates to them for recruitment. The Finance Ministry, however, attributed the delay in posting to the massive figure received. Meanwhile she reiterated that the recruitment portal will be opened in November for qualified applicants to apply. This begins posting processes.

The Minister's plea can be linked to the character of some Newly Trained Teachers who reject postings to the rural areas because of the challenges found in those places. It is also a fact that in this 21st Century, there are still many rural areas without access to electricity, communication network, potable water, deplorable road and bad poor housing system. These are major factors that discourage newly posted teachers from serving in such places.

This is why some teachers have argued that there should be a form of allowance paid to teachers serving in the rural areas but has not materialized. It is time the government gives rural areas the necessary attention by initiating developmental projects in these places.
