The fast and high spreading nature of the Coronavirus is something that is worrying. It therefore not surprising that most stakeholders, civil societies, and other concerned Ghanaians are expressing serious concerns over preparations made so far when the final year students of JHS, SHS and Universities reopen School as the government of Ghana has directed.
Information gathered from Isreal Education Ministry according to punchng.com indicated that just three weeks after resumption of school in Isreal, about 347 students and teachers has tested positive to the Coronavirus. The situation had led to the closure of 127 schools again over the weekend.
The Report further indicated that about 17500 Teachers and students are currently at home under quarantine. The initial number of Teachers and students under quarantine was 16000 but jumped to 17000 in 12 hours indicating an increase of 1500 persons in just 12 hours. This alarming situation prompted the shut down of 127 schools in Isreal in only three weeks after resumption of schools over there.
The question to our policy Makers in Ghana is what measures can be put in place to mitigate Covid-19 infections in schools as the doors are opened for academic work to commence.
With Ghana's present number of confirmed cases standing at 9910 according to the latest update from the Ghana health service with 6,217 active cases, 3,645 recoveries and 48 deaths, how prepared is the GES and the government of Ghana to ensure our schools donot become a victim as Isreal.
Again, the regional distribution indicates the virus gradually spreading all over the country with speed. The Greater Accra has the highest confirmed case of 4,436, Ashanti 1,734, Western 769, Central 489, Eastern 166, Volta 102, Upper Region 37, Oti 28, Upper West 7, North East 2, Savannah 1 and Ahofo has not recorded any case yet.
We are all to take the safety protocols into serious consideration and application.
What do you think, should the GES hold on or continue with it's arrangements towards resumption of schools?
